The way she stares
Her eyes a dead giveaway.
She bristles when you walk past
Catches her breath.
Woman’s intuition
More powerful to her
Than crystals and cowrie shells
Fables and palmistry.
Most days she plaits and braids
Sowing extensions
Into the frowns
Of gossips who chat non-stop
Neighbourhood griots
Too coarse for special titles.
She laughs a little
Elder’s heads between her thighs
And spins a tapestry
Her own fine design.
Bartered trinklets for her trouble
And good advice.

An empire with no name

Fine wine crushed
With seedless grapes.

Noisy ghosts of war.

The fairy of the fair

Next summer
Bright and early
We’ll start all over again.

Mothballs & dog-ears
There’s magic in books
A late 18th century text
Rare unbound version
I think.
Scarce as a penny black
A book-shelf my haven
Every column stacked
With history and art
Poetry and dance
Science and technology
Games and sport.
Et toi?
Seem like the extraverted type:
A well-worn illustrated tome
Filled with bold Helvetica
Paintings by Rembrandt
With tracing paper
Covering the pictures.
We swap like children
Then make love
On the ledge.

2 years and counting
since he say she say
made we
By introducing her to she
And so on..
An immediate attraction
That turned
Into a domestic arrangement
With a prophecy of love
Thrown in-
And a surrogate family
For good measure.
Conflicting schedules
That makes the time
We do spend together
Precious like a topaz
Or ruby.
No complaints here.
But sometimes I do
Peak over my shoulder
At cupid’s disaster areas
And wonder if a love supreme
Can really last the course.
Stunting like our ancestors did
So many long long years ago.
I’ve never been perfect
But healings my thang
And a soothing balm
With aromatherapy oils
Mixed with flower essences
At ten past midnight
Never did any harm
To a wayward heart.
Perhaps we were just
Destined to be
Written somewhere
In Akashic records
Sung about in classic songs
By Marvin and Tammy
And polished by edits
On a film director’s floor.
Cut the gloss
And here I am
A breakneck black superman
Soaring amazing heights
And battling with my shadow side.
An epic with only one victor
One triumph eternal.
And you
It could take a lifetime to know

The laborious result
Of a marathon weathered

Domestic
One slap too many
Everyone heard the cries
Pretending it was none of our business
Like those shades you wore
In the middle of winter
90s fashion icon.
I thought it was me
The way you just starred
Fire in your eyes
Crimson hatred
Weighing you
And us down.
Rotten baggage
Inherited from your mother
they say.
Man thieves and prostitutes not worth a second look.
Still that didn’t explain
The long silences
Phone calls and texts and night
To say that you were all right.
Dragged into an affair
I didn’t want
And forced to be your protector
Your black a moor prince.
One slap too many
A forceful freeze-frame
That stayed in my mind
The first time in the Arndale
When we locked eyes
And pretending to be strangers
Both numbed by the public rage
Of that punch in your eye.

Wicked bastards
Or just anxious?
A growing audience

Fate plays with a loaded dice
And loathes all disturbance.
That’s why I never gamble
Over a half glass of whiskey
Till the sun breaks
In the morn.

So now vexed at our folly
The days fade into a kaleidoscopic
Blur of existence
That seemingly has no end.
While nature stunts the weak
We shop for groceries
Oblivious to her hidden rhythms
As golfers trod the moon.
Lost somewhere
In a capsule of space
What are we
But microdots on the tapestry of life?
Running round and round in cycles
Arrogantly defying the planets
Stalking the earth.
A hierarchy of civilisations precedes us

And the clock ticks on..
