Era

Lost in time
Somewhere between the Wild West
And man’s first step on the moon.
Navigating our descent
Into the unknown
Constellations
In the form of archers and deer
Virgins and beasts.
Holograms we are
Soaring high-
Our destination another plane.
The truth of quantum physics
Wrapped up in ancient manuscripts
That tell our future
In Vedas and hymns.

Naked

Stark aniseed taste
Bitter chocolate.
Is life for living?
Or busting a gut
Convincing people
Of what I already am.

Karma

I’ve trodden this path
Long ago
Not once, nor twice but thrice.
The reality
Both hidden and seen
Of a Sufi’s life.

Momento

A marigold for you, my love
A hug to keep us warm.
My heart burns aloft with golden delight
Fiery passion from dusk ‘til dawn.
A keepsake for your memory
Healing balm for your pain.
A penny for your thoughts
As the world spins
Round and round again.

Baptism

Black hearts singing
Sacred hymns
Ancient prayers for redemption.
A life sized cross upon the wall,
Sacrifice.
An example for all to behold.
Sweat pouring down foreheads,
A frenzy and rush
For immersion in the river of eternal life.
O to be born again!
O to have the veil removed!
To rebuke wickedness in all its forms.
Hallelujah Hallelujah
The chorus cries.
As one dies
One is taken
Into the bosom of Yeshua
Forever.

Coolie

That girl with the nappy hair
Knows something about you.
The way she stares
Her eyes a dead giveaway.
She bristles when you walk past
Catches her breath.
Woman’s intuition
More powerful to her
Than crystals and cowrie shells
Fables and palmistry.
Most days she plaits and braids
Sowing extensions
Into the frowns
Of gossips who chat non-stop
Neighbourhood griots
Too coarse for special titles.
She laughs a little
Elder’s heads between her thighs
And spins a tapestry
Her own fine design.
Bartered trinklets for her trouble
And good advice.
Watch that one
-He’s Tu.

Bonesman

Under the ruins
Is where you’ll find me
Engraved in ancient fossils
Clay model at every bazaar.
Stone pillars atop soil
Soaked in black gold
Tell our story-
Precious lands
Where the mighty once trod.
Forgotten soldiers of Carthage
Gluttons to iniquity
Homage paid by statues no more.
My visage destroyed
By grave robbers and vandals
Hostile tribes.
Dig and you will see me
Remnants of our presence
Covering a vast expanse
An empire with no name
Once we would feast
Our victories in battle
Fine wine crushed
With seedless grapes.
Some day we’ll return
Noisy ghosts of war.
A toast to you, my friend.
Under the ruins is where you’ll find me.

Vril

The entrance
Bold and buoyant
Majestic.
His enemies’ circle
Epigrams scatter-
Followers keenly alert
To the power of his words.
He roars
And thunder exits his mouth
What type of man is this?
Acolytes struggle
To pronounce his name
Birds from heaven his zenith
The underground his base.
Bathed in cryptic tongues
He hails from the inconceivable.
Wonder?
Superman he is.
Be warned.

Treacle

Neon lights
Siren tones
I’ve never witnessed
So much joy.
Screams and shouts
Yelps and cries
Two girls and two boys.
Up and down
Round and round
Candy floss and bumper cars.
Whirling wheels
Loop the loop

Bright and early
We’ll start all over again.

Mothballs & dog-ears

There’s magic in books
A late 18th century text
Rare unbound version
I think.
Scarce as a penny black
A book-shelf my haven
Every column stacked
With history and art
Poetry and dance
Science and technology
Games and sport.
Et toi?
Seem like the extraverted type:
A well-worn illustrated tome
Filled with bold Helvetica
Paintings by Rembrandt
With tracing paper
Covering the pictures.
We swap like children
Then make love
On the ledge.

By Raymond Enisuoh

A love supreme

2 years and counting
since he say she say
made we
By introducing her to she
And so on..
An immediate attraction
That turned
Into a domestic arrangement
With a prophecy of love
Thrown in-
And a surrogate family
For good measure.
Conflicting schedules
That makes the time
We do spend together
Precious like a topaz
Or ruby.
No complaints here.
But sometimes I do
Peak over my shoulder
At cupid’s disaster areas
And wonder if a love supreme
Can really last the course.
Stunting like our ancestors did
So many long long years ago.
I’ve never been perfect
But healings my thang
And a soothing balm
With aromatherapy oils
Mixed with flower essences
At ten past midnight
Never did any harm
To a wayward heart.
Perhaps we were just
Destined to be
Written somewhere
In Akashic records
Sung about in classic songs
By Marvin and Tammy
And polished by edits
On a film director’s floor.
Cut the gloss
And here I am
A breakneck black superman
Soaring amazing heights
And battling with my shadow side.
An epic with only one victor
One triumph eternal.
And you
It could take a lifetime to know
But I like what I see
Sincerely.
Just don’t look back in anger
Until we’ve crossed the finish line.

Mount Carmel

Bring me a rose
Crimson red
A satin emblem
Of your journey
But not unless
It’s soaked in effort
The laborious result
Of a marathon weathered
A trial by fire.
Bring me a rose
An everlasting symbol
Of your unwavering commitment
Drowned in the thorns of days gone by
Petal by petal
A perfume
A mountain to climb
Fine wine to taste.
Listen to your master
But not at the expense
Of experience
Persistence
Love.
He too has pains.
Scars.
Bring me a rose.

Tetragrammaton

Splendid in thy magnificence
O holy one most resplendent
Alpha and omega
The first and the last
Omnipotent omnipresent

A command ‘I Am!’

Our true lamentation
A slain Egyptian
An idolatrous people
A wayward sheep
A vow
A covenant
A namesake to keep.

A little rascal
I saw him once
Fresh fish
Kicking mud

But for some reason
I felt responsible
For the stains on his heart.

Domestic

One slap too many
Everyone heard the cries
Pretending it was none of our business
Like those shades you wore
In the middle of winter
90s fashion icon.
I thought it was me
The way you just starred
Fire in your eyes
Crimson hatred
Weighing you
And us down.
Rotten baggage
Inherited from your mother
they say.
Man thieves and prostitutes not worth a second look.
Still that didn’t explain
The long silences
Phone calls and texts and night
To say that you were all right.
Dragged into an affair
I didn’t want
And forced to be your protector
Your black a moor prince.
One slap too many
A forceful freeze-frame
That stayed in my mind
The first time in the Arndale
When we locked eyes
And pretending to be strangers
Both numbed by the public rage
Of that punch in your eye.
I saw some bystanders laugh
Wicked bastards
Or just anxious?
A growing audience
Of spectators all guilty
By our willingness to do nothing.
Then the third time
It became too much
And I stepped forward
Hagler in the ring-
Issuing a critical beat down
Of blood and pulp
That left me feeling
Just like you.

Liberty

Words will not kill us.
We hang on each syllable
Articulating our past
And future
Dreams, loves and passions.
History favours the victor
But we the underdog
Have survived throughout time
By constantly recreating ourselves
With the wisdom of sages
And venom, of soldiers
Wounded and all consumed
With the imminent hope
Of returning home
One day.
Liberty will be ours
When we’ve cleaned away the debris
Removed the millstone from around our necks
And surge forward
Technology our chariot
With faith in our hearts.
No, words will not kill us.
A vanguard of
Lovers and fighters
Leading the renaissance
Our forebears wished for
Since the morning of time.

Wisdom

Life can be a tough old stint.
So little margin for error
In the cynical hubbub
Of day-to-day existence.
You can’t win for losing
Or shine without a heartbreak-
Here or there.
Fate plays with a loaded dice
And loathes all disturbance.
That’s why I never gamble
Over a half glass of whiskey
Till the sun breaks
In the morn.

Nova

Some say time abandoned us
So now vexed at our folly
The days fade into a kaleidoscopic
Blur of existence
That seemingly has no end.

While nature stunts the weak
We shop for groceries
Oblivious to her hidden rhythms
As golfers trod the moon.

Lost somewhere
In a capsule of space
What are we
But microdots on the tapestry of life?
Running round and round in cycles
Arrogantly defying the planets
Stalking the earth.

A hierarchy of civilisations precedes us
Just as the conscious and enlightened ones said:
The world waits with baited breath
And the clock ticks on..
