Moon Dancer
The blanket of madness
Engulfs a city.
Children too hard-bitten to wonder why.
At nighttimes a tapestry of lights
Leads to the moon.
The pitcher of the stars
Stands proud in his radiance.

Shaman
Our rhythmic cycle
Disturbed by the creatures
Of the earth-
Scurrying for shelter.
Our hibernation perplexed
By the greed of man.
We walk amongst you
Under many names
But never fear:
For we are ‘the gods’

Rising up once again
We the children of Abraham
Prepare for Zion.
God on our lips
Thirst on our tongues:
The sacred land has become
A denizen of iniquity.
We fear the crest
Devouring all in its path
And the sea-monster
Of Jonah’s deliverance.

Rainbow Smile
Disappearing into the heavens
Cyclops train:
A brilliant transformation

None but the initiated understand.
Rainbow smile
My jubilant gesture
Towards the sky
Laughter upon awakening
In my parental home
-Back so soon.

Runaway
Bullets for marbles
Our war-torn epic
Of lost youth, adolescent strategies
And unmarked graves.
Fighting a junta, an absent autocrat
In between games of soccer,
Injured stumps for legs
Dry maize for food.
The night stars a napkin
Our staple diet the blood of loved ones
Children treading carefully
Over poisoned land
Littered with mines.
A toy soldier’s hat removed
Long flowing hair
Not quite hiding the trauma
Of missed periods:
Rape as a warning.

Ghosts
Tiny footsteps of children
Echo through the air
Lost names, numbers.
Cackles of laughter
Haunt the hallway.
Cobwebs and mothballs
Shield a musty smell:
Asthmatic sneezes
Almost give the game away.
A Yiddish man
Confirms his identity
Hushed curses drowned out
By malevolence.
The marching of troops in the distance.
A cramped wardrobe
Hidden by a wearisome ritual.
An imaginary transistor radio
Confirms the war over.
A burnt yellow star
The dictator dead.
